Proud new owner of a 1990 White Toyota Liteace

That's right. We signed the papers, paid in cash and hit the road in our new vehicle/home. It rained yesterday in Auckland, poured actually. After getting the car settled and the rain had stopped we headed north on SH 1 towards Whangarei. Sarah was up first to drive since I'm more of the navigator. She did an excellent job and we only got "hooted" at a few times. Yes, they say "hoot" instead of honk. We stopped at a fruit store for lunch, saw our first beach in Orewa, then went to Whangarei Falls. The car is running great, but the seats are SO uncomfortable. Good thing towns here are only a few hours apart so we won't be sitting too long.

After Whangarei we continued onto Paihia which is the main town in the picturesque Bay of Islands. (Where all the pretty pictures of New Zealand are taken). We arrived in town around 8pm and went to hostel row on Kings Road. We went door to door looking for vacancy. Only one place had any room and their last vacancy was in their efficiency apartment. It was about 3 times as expensive as a dorm room, but 3 times as nice Im sure. And only $10 more than the hostel we stayed in in Auckland. So we are living the high life in our mini apartment and got a great night's sleep in the King bed.

Today we are going to explore Paihia and the surrounding towns, then met at the wharf at 4:45pm to board our overnight cruise. The cruise takes you to the other remote islands in the Bay of Islands and includes night kayaking (with millions of sea glow worms to light our way), fishing at dusk for dinner, a shooting competition (what?), sunrise at sea, snorkeling, more kayaking, dolphins, etc. It should be fun! The boat holds 36 people so we will get to meet new people and hopefully get good travel advice.

Here are some pictures from yesterday. I'll let you all know how the cruise goes!
Our spacious apartment room, hey beggers can't be choosers, it was all they had available!
